Tucked in the heart of Malibu wine country, in the stunning foothills of the Santa Monica and Simi mountains, is a flourishing community known as Westlake Village, a master community conceived by entrepreneur D. K. Ludwig in the 1960s. One of his businesses, a development company by the name of American-Hawaiian, contracted Bechtel Corporation to study and planned a “City in the Country” for prestigious lifestyles.
Fishing in westlake villageIn the center of the village is a man-made lake surrounded by astounding waterfront properties and luxury homes. The community has grown to include a plethora of waterfront and land activities sure to satisfy the pleasure-seeking needs of everyone in the household.
Outdoor activities include boating, fishing, hiking, biking, golf, and a multitude of parks to choose from. Indoor activities include shopping, spa treatments, wineries, arts and culture, movie theaters, and, of course, plenty of restaurants to suit any taste.
The focal point of Westlake Village is its water feature, the lake, managed by Westlake Lake Management Association (WLMA), which was designed to oversee the maintenance of Westlake Lake. Residents of the Westlake Village community are able to enjoy boating and fishing, but with licenses, fees, and certain regulations to preserve the integrity of the lake, fish, and commercial development around the lake.
Boats must meet certain insurance criteria and be properly marked with non-transferrable permits. The Westlake Yacht Club, in partnership with WLMA provides boating recreational activities for Club members and nonmembers, and sponsors a junior sailing program for Westlake’s youth. The Club is proud of its two Olympic Gold Medalists as well as honors received by the Southern California Yachting Association as the “Yacht Club of the Year”.
Fishing is also a beloved water activity in Westlake Village. Fishing is permitted with a strictly enforced “catch and release” policy. Fishing is limited to barbless hooks and artificial bait so that no fish are harmed during this relaxing sport. From one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset, fishing is allowed in Westlake Village Lake 365 days of the year. Fishing tournaments are also celebrated in the community with trophies awarded to winners.
For the golfer in the household, there’s Westlake Golf Course, built by famed architect Ted Robinson in 1967. The tree-lined course with lakes can be comfortably walked or traversed by cart and is complete with night lighted driving range, fully stocked bar, snack bar, pro shop, practice chipping and putting green, as well as teaching professionals, and rental clubs.
Westlake Village in California is also known for its many hiking trails including Chesebro Canyon, Pentachaeta, Malibu Creek State Park, and Wildwood Park. Grab your gear, pick a trail, and head out in search of your happy place in the great outdoors.
